John Bromfield, whose birth name was Farron McClain Bromfield, had three marriages. His first wife was the French actress Corinne Calvet, whom he married in 1948 but divorced in 1954. He then married dancer Larri Thomas in 1956, but that marriage also ended in divorce by 1959. His final marriage was to Kalantan in 1963, and they remained together until his death in 2005.

After beginning his career in film with small roles, John gained leading man status in the mid-1950s.
