Edward Erskholme Clive was born on August 28, 1883, in Monmouthshire, Wales. He initially studied medicine but decided to pursue acting instead after four years at the University of Wales. He married Eleanor Ann Nickson on September 11, 1915, and they had one child. He was survived by his widow and his son, David John Clive.
Career
Clive began his acting career in Britain, performing in various theatrical productions for a decade. He moved to the United States in 1912, becoming the leading performer in the Copley Theatre Stock Company in Boston. His Hollywood film career started later in life with The Invisible Man in 1933, and he often played serious roles, typified as British butlers and aristocrats.
