Barbara Ames was born Dorothy J. Truax on April 30, 1922, in Tarrant County, Texas. She was the daughter of actress Adrienne Ames and Derward Dumont Truax. At the age of 11, she was adopted by her stepfather, Bruce Cabot, on February 28, 1934.
